Holmes County and the Amish

When European immigrants fled post-reformation religious persecution and settled in the verdant valleys of Holmes County, Ohio, they brought with them a self reliance and independence from the rest of the world that remains today. These Amish and Mennonite settlers farmed for a living and grew, produced or crafted most of what they needed to survive. When you plan your trip to beautiful Mohican Country, make sure you stay long enough to visit Ohio’s Amish Country. Nearly every mile of state road in Holmes County is designated as an Ohio Scenic Byway and a National Scenic Byway Route, so slow down and enjoy the scenery. And while you’re here, take in the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of another era.

Visit the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center, Berlin, Ohio to learn much more.

Don’t miss the historic Ohio State Reformatory, which was featured in Shawshank Redemption and several other Hollywood movies.
